metaCCAZE Delivers Tangible CCAM Results Across Europe

Across Europe, CCAM technologies are increasingly moving beyond testing environments and becoming part of real mobility systems. Through its Trailblazer and Follower Cities, the Horizon Europe project metaCCAZE is demonstrating how connected, cooperative and automated mobility solutions can contribute to climate neutrality objectives while improving accessibility, efficiency and sustainability in urban transport.
A series of recent achievements illustrate the project’s strong progress. In Tampere, Finland, a fully autonomous robot bus has been integrated into the city’s public transport network, operating without an onboard safety driver and supervised remotely from a control centre. This marks an important step towards the large-scale deployment of automated public transport services and showcases the potential of remote operations for future mobility systems.
In Malta and Gozo, a new autonomous electric shuttle service has entered real-world testing, giving residents and visitors the opportunity to experience automated mobility in daily operations. The pilot demonstrates how collaboration between public authorities, transport operators and academic partners can accelerate the safe introduction of innovative mobility services.
metaCCAZE is also advancing automation beyond road transport. In Amsterdam, project partners have demonstrated significant progress in automated vessel control, helping pave the way for more efficient and sustainable inland waterway transport. At the same time, partners in Tampere have successfully tested an automated robotic charging system for autonomous electric buses, addressing a key operational challenge for future zero-emission automated fleets.
The project’s achievements extend beyond vehicle automation. In Limassol, the development of a Digital Twin Geoportal is providing city authorities with an advanced decision-support platform that combines transport, environmental, land-use and socio-demographic information. Further activities, including drone-based mobility data collection and research on shared and on-demand mobility solutions, are supporting a more integrated and data-driven approach to urban transport planning.
Together, these achievements demonstrate how CCAM technologies are delivering practical benefits across different transport modes and operational contexts. By combining automation, connectivity, electrification, digitalisation and citizen engagement, metaCCAZE is generating valuable knowledge and real-world experience that can support the broader deployment of CCAM solutions across Europe and contribute to the objectives of the CCAM Partnership.
