From demonstration to deployment in MODI final event: what it has taught us about automated freight transport in Europe

The MODI Final Event in Antwerp on 15th September 2026 marked the conclusion of four years of testing, collaboration and learning across the European freight transport ecosystem. More importantly, it highlighted what comes next. Our Vice-Chairman, Hamid Zarghampour, reflecting on what the project has taught us about moving from demonstration towards deployment of automated freight transport in Europe.
Throughout the project, partners demonstrated that Level 4 automated freight transport can operate in real logistics environments, including ports, terminals, logistics hubs and selected public road sections. Cross-border operations along the Rotterdam to Oslo corridor provided valuable experience on the practical challenges and opportunities of deploying automated transport across Europe.
A central lesson from MODI is that the future of automated freight transport is not determined by vehicle technology alone. Automation is a system challenge. Vehicles must interact seamlessly with logistics operations, terminal processes, infrastructure, traffic management systems, data platforms and regulatory frameworks. Success depends on how well these elements work together.
The project also showed that the transition from demonstrations to deployment requires a broader perspective than technology readiness. Automated freight transport represents a transformation of logistics systems. It affects operational processes, business models, workforce roles, safety management, public authorities and infrastructure planning. Deployment will only happen when these dimensions evolve together.
MODI delivered important technical and operational insights. The project validated interfaces between automated trucks and logistics environments, demonstrated the value of connected and cooperative traffic services, and showed how additional traffic and infrastructure information can improve the awareness and operational performance of automated vehicles.
The discussions at the final event reinforced another key message: the value of research and innovation projects lies not only in what they demonstrate, but in what can be reused, transferred and scaled. The results generated by MODI provide a foundation for future deployments and help reduce uncertainty for stakeholders considering automation in their operations.
The role of public authorities is equally important. Rather than investing only in infrastructure dedicated to automation, public policy should focus on creating the conditions that enable deployment. Infrastructure improvements should strengthen the overall transport system while supporting automation where clear operational and societal value can be achieved.
Over four years, MODI brought together vehicle manufacturers, logistics operators, technology providers, terminal operators, infrastructure managers, research organisations and public authorities. This collaboration has contributed to a stronger European ecosystem for automated road freight transport and improved understanding of the pathways towards large-scale deployment.
MODI may have reached its formal conclusion, but its impact extends beyond the project itself. The knowledge, partnerships and practical experience developed during the project will continue to support the next phase of Connected, Cooperative and Automated Mobility in Europe and help turn automation from isolated demonstrations into operational freight services.
