CARMONY new deliverable advances traffic orchestration with its initial agent-based simulation system

Understanding how new traffic management and orchestration strategies will behave before they are deployed on real roads is essential for safer, more efficient and more sustainable mobility systems. To support this objective, the CARMONY project has released Deliverable D3.3, presenting the initial version of its Simulation System.
The simulation system is a core component of the CARMONY Orchestrator architecture and has been designed to support the project’s ambition of testing and evaluating complex mobility and traffic management scenarios in a virtual environment. At its foundation are two key principles: providing access to a robust traffic simulation engine capable of handling different levels of scale and fidelity, and ensuring interoperability with the wider CARMONY ecosystem.
The system combines several complementary components, including a Simulation Framework, an Interoperability Framework, and a suite of Agent-Based Network Management Controllers. Together, these elements enable the representation of complex traffic processes and management strategies while allowing seamless integration with other CARMONY services and technologies.
Deliverable D3.3 also demonstrates the platform in action through a real project use case. The accompanying video showcases the process of setting up and running a traffic simulation scenario, highlighting how the different components work together to support the evaluation of orchestration measures and mobility interventions.
While this is an initial version of the platform, the work already provides a strong foundation for future developments. The simulation environment will serve as a testing ground for additional CARMONY technologies, support pilot activities across the project, and help refine the overall orchestrator architecture. Future work will focus on expanding system functionalities, validating the platform through pilot deployments, and incorporating feedback to deliver a fully mature simulation system.
By enabling stakeholders to explore complex mobility scenarios before real-world implementation, the CARMONY simulation platform contributes to the development of more efficient, safer and more sustainable transport networks.
