MOBILITIES FOR EU Launches Spain’s First Autonomous On-Demand Bus at Mercamadrid

The MOBILITIES FOR EU project has reached a major milestone with the launch of Spain’s first autonomous on-demand bus operating at Mercamadrid, the country’s largest food distribution platform.

The pilot introduces a fully electric autonomous shuttle designed to provide flexible and sustainable mobility services within the busy logistics hub. By combining autonomous driving technology, 5G connectivity, and on-demand operations, the initiative demonstrates how innovative transport solutions can improve mobility in complex real-world environments.

Mercamadrid welcomes more than 20,000 people and 15,000 vehicles every day, making it an ideal testing ground for next-generation mobility services. Operating within this dynamic environment allows project partners to assess the performance, reliability, and user acceptance of automated public transport solutions under real operational conditions.

The demonstration goes beyond showcasing technological innovation. It provides valuable insights into how autonomous public transport can contribute to cleaner, more efficient, and more sustainable urban mobility systems. The knowledge generated through the pilot will help identify opportunities and challenges related to the deployment of automated mobility services in cities across Europe.

The launch represents an important step in the transition towards smarter and more connected transport networks. By testing autonomous mobility in a practical setting, the project contributes to building the evidence needed to support future large-scale deployment and integration of automated transport services.

This achievement reflects the strong collaboration between project partners, including Alsa, Mercamadrid, and the Madrid City Council Digital Office, all working together to advance the future of sustainable urban mobility.
